The exhibition documents the history of
Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre

in association with
International Artists

Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre was founded by Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith, Prof. Gayle McKinney Griffith, Lynnda Curry, Ricky Powell and Detlef Bäcker, four American artists and a German colleague, who met in Berlin during 1979 at Theater des Westens and decided to undertake intercultural, interdisciplinary and international productions in dance, theatre, television, workshops, film/video festivals and publications.

This exhibition paints a picture of the activities of various people during their historical contributions to Berlin, elsewhere and hence, the portrait seeks to prevent these undertakings from becoming "Footprints in the Sand?".

Die Ausstellung dokumentiert die Geschichte des
Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre

in Verbindung mit
Internationalen KünstlerInnen

Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre wurde von Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith, Prof. Gayle McKinney Griffith, Lynnda Curry, Ricky Powell und Detlef Bäcker, vier amerikanischen Künstlern und einem deutschen Kollegen, die sich in Berlin 1979 am Theater des Westens trafen, gegründet. Sie entschieden sich, mit der Durchführung von interkulturellen, interdisziplinären und internationalen Produktionen in den Bereichen Tanz, Theater, Fernsehen, Workshops, Film/Video Festivals und Publikationen zu beginnen.

Die Ausstellung zeichnet ein Bild der Aktivitäten verschiedener Menschen bei ihren historischen Beiträgen für Berlin und andere Orte, mit der Intention, diese Unternehmungen davor zu schützen, "Footprints in the Sand?" zu werden.

"The Dream Creatures" is the last of five films from "The Yellow House" - a Copenhagen housing block. In "The Dream Creatures", Chloë and Thea pay a secret visit to two-year old Valdemar in his mother's studio (Danish painter Kathrine Ærtebjerg). Strange things happen up there, where all the dreams of the yellow house go to be transformed into pictures. A funny, philosophical encounter between art and children.
"The Dream Creatures" ist der letzte von fünf Filmen aus "The Yellow House", einem Kopenhagener Wohnblock. In "The Dream Creatures" besuchen Chloë und Thea heimlich den 2-jährigen Valdemar im Studio seiner Mutter (die dänische Malerin Katherine Ærtebjerg). Merkwürdige Dinge passieren hier oben, wo alle Träume des Gelben Hauses hingehen, um in Bilder verwandelt zu werden. Ein lustiges, philosophisches Aufeinandertreffen zwischen Kunst und Kindern.

Excerpts from "Ain't I A Women?", an original performance utilizing readings in English and German, dance and music to portray an international and intercultural group of women, who created and made a vivid impression upon the world, from the 18th century to the present and beyond. "FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND?"
The lessons of history arrive in the form of personal experiences, books, media presentations, paintings, architecture and so on.

How these materials are interpreted and perhaps, through the ages, re-interpreted assuming the information is included, varies according to the group or the individual perspective, interests, socio-economic influences and opportunities.

As we pass through the formal educational process, we are informed of histories; others and ours.

It generally requires an enlightened mentor or parent to point out what is overlooked in the presentation of history, so earnestly injected into our academic and formative education.

Many years ago, as this awareness of history’s exceptions were realized, my parents, John Willis Griffith, Edith Paulina Muldrow Griffith, and my mentor, Oscar Brown Jr., pointed out the necessity for assuming responsibility and making sacrifices necessary to enlighten shadows and fill empty historical spaces.

So, the development of information, awareness, heightened sensibility and maturation leads to inevitable conclusions.

Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre from inception in 1980, remains an initiative and institution for the documentation and preservation of the existence and contributions of individuals and groups, to the societies in which they and we reside.

We are participants in the process of embedding in memories and stone, what previously might have been, "Footprints in the Sand?".

"FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND?"
Die Lehren der Geschichte offenbaren sich in Form von persönlichen Erfahrungen, in Büchern, durch Darstellungen in den Medien, in der Malerei, Architektur und so fort.

Wie dieses Material interpretiert und vielleicht im Laufe der Zeit neu interpretiert wird in der Annahme, entsprechende Informationen sind vorhanden, variiert abhängig von der Perspektive, Interessen, der sozioökonomischen Einflüsse und Möglichkeiten der Gruppe und des Einzelnen.

Während wir die allgemeine Schulbildung durchlaufen, werden wir über Geschichte informiert, über die Anderer und über unsere eigene.

Es erfordert im allgemeinen einen aufgeklärten Mentor oder Eltern, die einen auf das aufmerksam machen, was in der Geschichtsschreibung übersehen wurde, die auf so gewissenhafte Weise in unsere akademische und prägende Bildung eingeflossen ist.

Vor vielen Jahren, als uns bewusst wurde, dass es Lücken in der Geschichte gibt, machten meine Eltern, John Willis Griffith und Edith Paulina Muldrow Griffith, sowie mein Mentor, Oscar Brown Jr., auf die Notwendigkeit aufmerksam, Verantwortung zu übernehmen und die erforderlichen Opfer zu erbringen, um Licht auf die Schatten zu werfen und die leeren Stellen der Geschichtsdarstellung zu füllen.

Somit führt die Entwicklung von Information, Bewusstsein, gesteigerter Wahrnehmung und Reife zu unvermeidlichen Schlussfolgerungen.

Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre bleibt seit seiner Entstehung 1980 eine Initiative und Institution für die Dokumentation über die Existenz von Einzelnen und Gruppen und die Bewahrung ihrer Beiträge zu den Gesellschaften, in denen sie und wir leben.

Wir sind TeilnehmerInnen im Prozess, das in Erinnerung zu halten und zu festigen, was vormals "Footprints in the Sand?" gewesen sein mag.

Grownupism!
1Day, When I Grow Up!

So, as usual, I wuz sittin' an' stinkin' 'bout ev'rythin' an' nothin'!
Sumtimes, when I stink 'bout nothin', I geta dreamy, kinda nice feelin' in my head an' in my whole self.
When I look at the sky, I feel like I'm floatin' an' the wind is carryin' me in nothin', but happy directions.
I luv feelin' happy an' floatin' in peaceful directions.
'Cause I know, an' I'm sure that all kinda good things are gonna be inside an' all around me!
I just know it, 'cause I can feel it!
Sumtimes I ask my partnurs 'bout how they feel an' get all kinda different answers, that I didn't even know existed?
Sumtimes it's sad an' sumtimes it's "I don't wanna talk 'bout it" an' sumtimes they feel good spacin' out, just like I do!
That makes me happy!
I like feelin' happy, as a matter of fact, I luv feelin' happy -
Like my papa sez sumtimes, "Why not be happy, because being unhappy is like having your car wheels stuck in the mud and hearing them do a spin dance, which only takes you down and down and makes it hard to ever get you out!"
So there, as usual, my papa has all the wonderful answers to evrythin' -
My whole family is super lucky to have a papa like him an' as granma alwayz sez, "Our family is blessed."
Wow, I'm not only a lucky dreamy kid sumtimes, but I'm also blessed!
Lucky us!
Well, I'm gettin' kinda sleepy with all this dreamin' an' blessin' stuff so I'll do my homewerk in the mornin', before I go to skool!

Ich Glücklicher!

PART LXXIX
Erwachsensein!
Eines Tages, wenn ich erwachsen werde!

Also, wie üblich war ich am Sitz'n und Stink'n üba alles und nichts!
Manchma', wenn ich an nichts denk, bekomm ich 'n verträumtes irgendwie gutes Gefühl in meinem Kopf und überall in mir.
Wenn ich den Himmel anseh, hab ich das Gefühl, ich schweb und der Wind trägt mich in nichts als glückliche Richtungen.
Ich liebe es, glücklich zu sein und in friedliche Richtungen zu schweb'n.
Weil ich weiß und ich bin sicher, dass alle möglichen guten Dinge in mir und überall um mich herum sein werd'n!
Ich weiß es einfach, weil ich es fühl'n kann!
Manchma' frag ich meine Kumpels, wie sie sich fühl'n, und bekomm alle möglichen verschiedenen Antworten, von denen ich nich' ma' wusste, dass es sie gibt?
Manchma' sag'n sie traurig, manchma' "ich will nich' drüba red'n" und manchma' fühl'n sie sich gut, die Gedanken flieg'n zu lass'n, so wie ich es auch mag!
Das macht mich glücklich!
Ich mag es gern, glücklich zu sein, Tatsache is', ich lieb es, glücklich zu sein -
Wie mein Papa manchma' sagt: "Warum nicht glücklich sein, weil unglücklich zu sein so ist, als ob deine Wagenräder im Schlamm feststecken und du hörst, wie sie durchdrehen, was dich nur weiter einsinken lässt und es noch schwerer macht, dich jemals zu befreien!"
Na bitte, wie imma hat mein Papa all die wundervollen Antworten auf alles -
Meine ganze Familie hat super Glück, einen Papa wie ihn zu hab'n, und wie Oma imma sagt: "Unsere Familie ist gesegnet."
Wow, ich bin nich' nur 'n verträumtes Kind, manchma', sondern ich bin auch gesegnet!
Wir Glücklichen!
Nun, ich werd irgendwie müde von diesem ganzen Geträume und Segenzeugs, darum werd ich meine Hausaufgaben am Morgen mach'n, bevor ich zur Schule geh!

Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre:
On a mission of cultural unity

For the past 30 years Professor Donald Muldrow Griffith has used the arts to pursue a very personal mission - to create harmony between people of different cultures in his adopted home of Berlin, West Germany.

Griffith, who is African-American, and three fellow artists, his now wife, Gayle McKinney Griffith, Ricky Powell and Lynnda Curry founded the Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre in 1980 with that goal in mind. Three decades later the Griffiths continue to run a set of highly-regarded, multi-disciplinary programs in theatre, film, music and dance under its umbrella, bringing together not only local artists, but those from all over Europe and the world.

The annual Black International Berlin Film Festival, for example, attracts filmmakers like award-winning Frances-Anne Solomon, a UK-born Trinidadian, whose works include the 2007 A Winter's Tale, an examination of life in Toronto's Caribbean community. With a focus on the African Diaspora and Africa, as well as other intercultural perspectives, some 60 films from countries like Cape Verde, Iran, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Madagascar were screened at the 2010 event.

Meanwhile, a weekly TV show, THE COLLEGIUM keeps its finger on the artistic pulse, especially when it comes to introducing "unseen faces" to audiences. "The goal of the telecast is to provide a forum for persons of various national, cultural, ethnic, religious and socio-economic backgrounds to present their perspectives to a diverse and interested audience," the organization said. The program is broadcast every Sunday from 7-8 p.m., Wednesday from 3.45-4.45 p.m. and Thursday from 10-11 p.m. on the ALEX - Open Channel Berlin (ALEX - Offener Kanal Berlin), with additional showings in other German cities.

With a strong roster of programs and future initiatives - like the Fountainhead® in Consultation, which will formally bring together artists, educators, business people and others - the future looks bright for the theatre.

And, there is no doubt that Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre today reflects the culmination of the group's vision all those years ago. Griffith recalls the moment when everything crystallized shortly after the four accepted an invitation from Theater des Westens to Berlin in the late 1970s. Inspired by their new surroundings, all of them decided to stay.

"I read an article in the International Herald Tribune about a museum being completed in Paris, France where the director stated they wanted the Centre Georges Pompidou to become a `fountainhead of art,' a source of creativity that was and remains one of the basic tenets of the philosophy Fountainhead Tanz Theatre seeks to pursue. Our colleagues agreed upon the name and direction. We were home in Europe and Berlin, Germany," Griffith explained.

With longevity that any enterprise would envy - the film festival just marked its 24th year, and the Collegium its 15th - Griffith is proud of their accomplishments but not surprised. He believes it all comes down to the power of the arts.

"Art is a source of creativity, inspiration, information and a means of communicating across and through possible obstacles of language, nationality, customs, culture and misunderstandings based upon skin color, gender and sexual persuasion," Griffith said.

Während der letzen dreißig Jahre hat Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith die Kunst genutzt, um eine sehr persönliche Mission zu verfolgen - Harmonie zwischen Menschen verschiedener Kulturen zu bewirken in seiner Wahlheimat Berlin, Deutschland.

Griffith, der Afrikanisch-Amerikaner ist, und drei Künstlerkollegen - seine jetzige Frau, Prof. Gayle McKinney Griffith, Ricky Powell und Lynnda Curry - gründeten das Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre 1980 mit diesem Ziel vor Augen. Drei Jahrzehnte später setzen die Griffiths eine Reihe höchst anerkannter und multi-disziplinärer Programme im Bereich Theater, Film, Musik und Tanz unter dieser Dachorganisation fort, indem sie nicht nur ansässige Künstler zusammenbringen, sondern auch aus ganz Europa und der Welt.

Das jährliche Black International Cinema Berlin Filmfestival zieht zum Beispiel Filmemacher wie die preisgekrönte Frances-Anne Solomon an. Die in Großbritannien geborene Trinidaderin zählt zu ihren Arbeiten den im Jahr 2007 entstandenen Film "A Winter Tale", eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Leben der karibischen Gemeinschaft in Toronto. Mit Fokus auf die Afrikanische Diaspora und Afrika, sowie andere interkulturelle Perspektiven, wurden 2010 auf dem Festival um die 60 Filme aus Ländern wie den Kapverden, Iran, Spanien, Deutschland, Großbritannien und Madagaskar präsentiert.

Unterdessen hält eine wöchentliche Fernsehsendung, THE COLLEGIUM, ihren Finger auf den künstlerischen Puls, besonders, wenn es darum geht, "ungesehene Gesichter" dem Publikum vorzustellen. "Das Ziel der Sendung ist es, ein Forum für Menschen mit verschiedenen nationalen, kulturellen, ethnischen, religiösen und sozioökonomischen Hintergründen bereitzustellen, um ihre Sichtweisen einem manigfaltigen und interessierten Publikum zu präsentieren," sagt die Organisation. Das Programm wird jeden Sonntag von 19-20 Uhr, mittwochs von 15.45-16.45 Uhr und donnerstags von 22-23 Uhr im Alex - Offener Kanal Berlin präsentiert und zusätzlich in anderen deutschen Städten (Magdeburg, Wolfsburg, Dessau).

Mit einem fundierten Plan für Programme und zukünftige Initiativen - wie dem Fountainhead® in Consultation, das in anspruchsvoller Weise Künstler, Lehrende, Geschäftsleute und andere zusammenbringen wird - sieht die Zukunft für das Theatre blendend aus.

Und es besteht kein Zweifel daran, dass das Fountainhead® Tanz Theatre heute ein Höchstmaß an Umsetzung der Visionen der Gruppe aus all den vergangenen Jahren widerspiegelt. Griffith erinnert sich an den Moment, als sich alles deutlich abzeichnete, kurz nachdem die vier eine Einladung vom Theater des Westens nach Berlin in den späten 1970ern annahmen. Inspiriert durch ihre neue Umgebung, entschlossen sich alle zu bleiben.

Aufgrund der Langlebigkeit, die jedes Unternehmen beneiden würde, - das Festival hat gerade sein 24. Jahr erreicht und THE COLLEGIUM sein 15. - ist Griffith stolz, aber nicht überrascht. Er glaubt daran, dass Kunst die Kraft hat, vieles zu bewegen.

"Kunst ist eine Quelle der Kreativität, Inspiration, Information und Mittel der Kommunikation über und durch mögliche Hindernisse bedingt durch Sprache, Nationalität, Bräuche, Kultur und Missverständnisse basierend auf Hautfarbe, Geschlecht und sexueller Ausrichtung hinweg," sagt Griffith.

Grownupism!
1Day, When I Grow Up!

So, as usual, I wuz sittin’ an’ stinkin’ ‘bout summer days, sleepin’ late, no homework, stayin’ up late an’ havin’ fun with my pardnurs an’ my family!
Now, a lotta that guud stuff is gone!
The weather is turnin’ against evrybody, with short days, chilly winds, rain an’ the leaves are startin’ to drop faster then the rain!
I guess nothin’ great lasts forever an’ the most yukky thing ‘bout the whole situation is…
Skools starting!
Double yukky!
Man, I keep hearing ‘bout less an’ less money for evrybody an’ that we have to save, save, save!
Well, I gotta idea of how we can save a lotta money an’ plus make a lotta peeple reel happy!
Well maybe, sum peeple won’t be to happy, like the dragon-teechers, but us kidz are gonna be ekstatic, if they listen to my great idea!
Close the skools!
We culd have home-skool teachin’ an’ learnin’ an’ make life a lot easier an’ fun for evrybody!
Man oh man, do I ever have great ideas! I’m so prouda me, I culd turn a buncha summersaults ‘round the neighbourhood!
Now the only question is, will ev'rybody listen to me?
Actually, I’m sure they’ll listen to me, ‘cause I know I’m not the only smart person in the wurl an’ they listen to those smarties!
So, they gotta listen to reson an’ use my idea to save money an’ plus, make a lotta peeple reel happy!
Not evrybody happy, but a lotta peeple!
Can’t win ‘em all!

Erwachsensein!
Eines Tages, wenn ich erwachsen werde!

Also, wie üblich war ich am Sitz’n und Stink’n üba Sommertage, spät ins Bett geh'n, keine Hausaufgaben, spät aufsteh'n und Spaß hab'n mit mein' Kumpels und meiner Familie!
Jetz' is' 'ne Menge von den guten Sachen vorbei!
Das Wetter richtet sich gegen jeden, mit kurzen Tagen, kaltem Wind, Regen und die Blätter fang'n an, schneller zu fall'n als der Regen!
Ich glaub', nichts Großartiges bleibt für imma und das Ekligste an der ganzen Situation is'...
Schulanfang!
Doppeligitt!
Mann, ständig hör ich üba imma weniger Geld für alle und dass wir spar'n, spar'n, spar'n müss'n!
Nun, ich hab 'ne Idee, wie wir 'ne Menge Geld spar'n könn' und gleichzeitig 'ne Menge Menschen wirklich glücklich mach'n könn'!
Na gut, vielleicht würd'n einige Leute nich' allzu glücklich werd'n, so wie die Drachenlehrer, aber wir Kids würd'n ausrast'n, wenn sie von meiner großartigen Idee hör'n!
Schließt die Schulen!
Wir könnt'n Hausunterricht bekomm' und dort lern' und das würde das Leben erheblich erleichtern und wäre Spaß für jeden!
Mann, oh Mann, kann ich imma super Ideen hab'n!
Ich bin so stolz auf mich, ich könnt' 'n Haufen Flik-Flaks durch die Nachbarschaft schlag'n!
Jetz' bleibt nur die eine Frage, wird mir jeder zuhör'n?
Eigentlich bin ich sicher, dass sie mir zuhör'n werd'n, weil ich weiß, dass ich nicht die einzige kluge Person auf der Welt bin, und die hör'n ja auf die Klugen!
Also werd'n sie der Vernunft folg'n und meine Idee umsetz'n, um Geld zu spar'n und außerdem jede Menge Leute wirklich glücklich zu mach'n!
Nich' jeden glücklich, aber 'ne Menge Leute!
Man kann sie nich' alle gewinn'!
Puh, dieses Strategisier'n macht mich müde!

The lessons of history arrive in the form of personal experiences, books, media presentations, paintings, architecture and so on.

As we pass through the formal educational process, we are informed of histories; others and ours.

It generally requires an enlightened mentor or parent to point out what is overlooked in the presentation of history, so earnestly injected into our academic and formative education.

So, the development of information, awareness, heightened sensibility and maturation leads to inevitable conclusions.

We are participants in the process of embedding in memories and stone, what previously might have been, "Footprints in the Sand?".

"FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND?"
Die Lehren der Geschichte offenbaren sich in Form von persönlichen Erfahrungen, in Büchern, durch Darstellungen in den Medien, in der Malerei, Architektur und so fort.

Während wir die allgemeine Schulbildung durchlaufen, werden wir über Geschichte informiert, über die Anderer und über unsere eigene.

Somit führt die Entwicklung von Information, Bewusstsein, gesteigerter Wahrnehmung und Reife zu unvermeidlichen Schlussfolgerungen.

from the Commissioner for Integration of the district
Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Berlin
to the XXV. Black International Cinema Berlin 2010

Migration has always – nowadays and in the past – created a multicultural reality. To acknowledge this fact and to anchor it in the center of society, remains a significant task for the coming years.

Despite the current efforts in the debate regarding integration politics, to acknowledge “diversity” being an “enrichment”, old ideas are still prevalent that there exists a “homogenous majority” in the center of society, to which “foreign minorities” are challenged to assimilate.

In contrast to this I would like to point out: the city’s society of Berlin is heterogeneous, people from different ways of life live here, together in active and dynamic connections. On the way to an urban society acknowledgement of a changed societal complexion, is a first step.

Not only portraying this diversity, but furthermore to actively realize it requires an open dialogue on a level playing field, equal opportunities and the right to participate.

Art and culture can build bridges, cross borders and pull away from stereotypical categorized thinking. Therefore, initiatives such as Black International Cinema Berlin are important for the capital of Germany.

In 2010, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Black International Cinema Berlin. I extend my congratulations to the organizers of Black International Cinema Berlin, a cultural highlight which is unique Germany-wide.

I wish the events many guests and for all of us, new inspiration.

zum XXV. Black International Cinema Berlin 2010

Migration hat schon immer - heute und gestern - vielkulturelle Realität geschaffen. Diese anzuerkennen und im Zentrum der Gesellschaft zu verankern, bleibt auch in den kommenden Jahren eine wichtige Aufgabe.

Trotz aktueller Bemühungen in der integrationspolitischen Debatte, „Vielfalt“ als „Bereicherung“ anzuerkennen, herrschen immer noch alte Vorstellungen vor: Es gebe eine „homogene Mehrheit“ im Zentrum der Gesellschaft, an die sich die „fremden Minderheiten“ anzupassen haben.

Demgegenüber möchte ich betonen: Berlins Stadtgesellschaft ist heterogen, Menschen in verschiedenen Lebenslagen leben hier, miteinander in aktiven und dynamischen Beziehungen. Auf dem Weg in eine urbane Gesellschaft ist die Anerkennung des gewandelten gesellschaftlichen Erscheinungsbildes ein erster Schritt.

Diese Diversität nicht einfach nur abzubilden, sondern sie darüber hinaus aktiv umzusetzen, erfordert einen offenen Dialog auf Augenhöhe, braucht Chancengleichheit und das Recht auf Teilhabe.

Kunst und Kultur kann hier Brücken bauen, Grenzen überschreiten und sich stereotypischem Schubladendenken entziehen. Deshalb sind Initiativen wie Black International Cinema Berlin wichtig für die Hauptstadt.

Im Jahre 2010 begehen wir das 25jährige Jubiläum von Black International Cinema Berlin. Mein Dank geht an die Organisatorinnen und Organisatoren von Black International Cinema Berlin, ein kulturelles Highlight, welches deutschlandweit einmalig ist.

Ich wünsche den Veranstaltungen zahlreiche Besucher und uns allen, neue Anregungen.
